What is Diwali?
Diwali (also spelled Deepavali) is Indiaโs biggest and most widely celebrated holiday. Known as the Hindu Festival of Lights, Diwali symbolizes the spiritual triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.
The holiday typically lasts five days, beginning in mid-October to mid-November, depending on the lunar calendar. In 2025, Diwali will begin on October 20th.
How is Diwali Celebrated?
Across communities worldwide, Diwali is marked by:
๐ช Lighting diyas (lamps) and decorating homes with candles and lanterns.
๐ Exchanging gifts and sweets with family and friends.
๐ Family gatherings filled with prayers, food, and traditions.
๐ Fireworks and sparklers to symbolize the victory of light over darkness.
The third day of Diwali is the most important, when families gather to celebrate with light both in their homes and in the skies.
